The 2008 Election: Fred Thompson jumps in.
“Above all, the Framers enshrined in our founding documents, and left to our care, the principle that rights come from our Creator and not from our government.” from Fred Thompson’s website.
This one quote says it all.
- I believe in God
- I’m a conservative
- I’ll protect the constitution
This may be a comfort to those who extol the romantic ideals of pure Federalism, but it’s not going to make anyone vote for Fred Thompson. The truth is that Fred Thompson has to define himself and he has to do it soon. He wasn’t able to raise the money that he was supposed to raise and he does not appear to be able to keep a staff very well either. What’s even worse for Thompson is that his speeches thus far have not met the expectations one would have for a potential president. What all this means is that his opponents have plenty of ammunition in defining Thompson themselves.
On the flipside, despite having entered the race late, Thompson is very competitive in nationwide polls and might actually have a shot at winning in Iowa and New Hampshire despite having been outspent in these states.
Prediction: If Thompson does not show well in Iowa and finish at least a strong second in New Hampshire, then he’s done.
I think it’s too early to tell what’s going to happen in Iowa, but do not be surprised that come March 1st, it’s down to Rudy Giuliani, Mitt Romney and Ron Paul. Something in my gut tells me that there is something to Ron Paul that is lacking in most Republican candidates.
