Al Gore for President
I hope Mr. Gore runs in 2008, and urge his election as President. I currently refuse to support any of the announced Democratic candidates for president. As a moderate independent, I believe it is time for a change in US Foreign Policy, but more importantly, it is time we took the environment more seriously. As of this moment, only two of the current candidates (Joseph Biden and Ron Paul–the latter being a Republican) have impressed me with their stands. Alas, neither of the two has convinced me of their commitment to the environment, and I am therefore hoping that Mr. Gore will run.
Having said all this, I want to say a thing or two about Ron Paul. His comments about why the terrorists hate us, while inflammatory to his friends in the GOP, took courage and understanding.Â
We must, after all, acknowledge the basic truth about our struggles with the terrorist, which is that their unjustified violence against innocent American, British and EU citizens does not come from a vacuum, it comes from several decades of misguided foreign policy and a basic lack of understanding of foreign cultures. To stop the terrorists we must elect a president who possesses the intellectual depth and courage to craft an effective foreign policy for the middle east, and we must begin the long journey towards reconciling our differences.Â
We must also remember that the overwhelming majority of people in the middle east are good people who want peace and a decent life as much as we do. Let us not forget them.
